Our New Great Nutrition Line Tag
Nutrition Line Tag
GRADE LEVEL: 3-6
EQUIPMENT: 18 Pinnies, 1 bin, 2 buckets, nutrition sponges
HIGHLIGHTS: Running, Evading, Chasing, Quick identification and reaction, Basic Food Pyramid knowledge
INSTRUCTIONS: Divide the students into two teams. The team on defense will wear the pinnies first. Begin the class with a small lecture about healthy eating and introduce the food pyramid. Show the students the poster and identify the six major food groups. Proceed to explain the importance of eating a balanced diet and doing regular physical activity each day.
Nutrition Tag explanation:
One team is spread out on horizontal lines on the gym floor. Max. of two people per line allowed. On whistle, each person on the offensive team picks up a nutrition sponge. They look and see what kind of food it is.
The students must then run through the maze of defenders. The defenders must stay on their lines and try to tag the offensive players with the sponge. If they are successful, the offensive player must return back to the beginning and place the sponge in the beginning bin. They then pick up another sponge and start again. If the offensive team is tagged, they must immediately get out of the playing area and run around the outside to get to the starting line. If the offensive player is successful and gets through the maze, they must then place the sponges into either a ‘healthy bucket’ or an ‘unhealthy bucket’.
After 5 minutes of play, the game stops and the team counts how many sponges they collected. They then must place the sponges in six different food groups like the food pyramid.
The teams then switch roles and the other team tries to get as many sponges as they can into the buckets.
The team with the most correctly placed food sponges in their six different food groups….wins!
